Description

Everyone’s favourite (if you live in the northern hemisphere), a spectacular summer globular cluster in Hercules, lying 25,000 LY from earth and containing 100,000 stars including a large number of ‘blue stragglers’ (as a result of the close interaction of the stars). At this time of year it reaches the zenith just before dawn. Watching this fine object fade away into the morning light is a wonderful experience. Just under an hour of integration provides more than sufficient data to show off some detail and colour.

I was showing my revision to our Ukrainian guests, and they reminded me that these were the colours of Ukraine. As this horrific war drags on please don’t let Ukraine and their suffering fade from your memory - Слава Україні 🇺🇦

Title: In the colours of Ukraine

Description: Binned 2 x 2 to improve image scale - aligned in ASTAP (best 60% frames), background extraction in Siril and processed in Startools with a more gentle stretch, colour constancy, a little sharpening and deconvolution, and final noise reduction. Certainly accentuates the colour in this majestic globular.

Title: Processed in Siril

Description: Binned 2x2 to improve sampling. Asinh followed by hyperbolic transformation, with a little more deconvolution and colour saturation.

Title: Processed in Siril and Astrosharp

Description: Processed in Siril using Generalised Hyperbolic Stretch to try and avoid burning out the core, as suggested by @northisup2 John Leader, who produced a fabulous image recently https://www.astrobin.com/full/9bs3hj/0/. I used photometric colour calibration, green neutralisation, then put the resulting tiff through Astrosharp to tighten up the stars.
